Lara Popular in 2015?

The study of names has always fascinated me. I was doing some name research on the internet today, of course spurred by the excellent read Freakonomics, and found an interesting list by Steven D. Levitt, rogue economist and author:

Most Popular Girls' Names of 2015

  • Lara
  • Linden
  • Maeve
  • Maya
  • Philippa
  • Phoebe
  • Quinn
  • Sophie
  • Waverly

This is just a snippet. See the rest here: http://www.slate.com/id/2116505/sidebar/2116512/

Apparently, my name may reach the height of popularity in 2015! Time will tell. It's interesting to consider the name Lara popular, because when I was younger, the name Lara caused me some grief. People were always calling me Laura, and if they did manage to get it right, they usually butchered my preferred pronunciation. As a child, it was also quite traumatizing never to find the stickers, pens, magnets, keychains, etc., with your name on it, as I recall.

However!! As I got older, I grew to love my name, developed the confidence to wear it well, and found the wisdom to appreciate having a unique name. Thanks Mom and Dad!

Wow Mom very fun research! COOL! Thanks! I had never heard the Protection one before. Wow this gives you lots of nickname possibilites: Larina, Larinda, very fun.

Wow I'm currently #695? Not bad, not bad. Interesting to note that there are way fewer first names than last names, isn't it?

Now did you say you had researched Lorne's name too?

I always loved having a unique name; it made me proud to be the only one of me around, even in those years where I had ghastly low self-esteem. Funny thing is that it's only in more recent years that I've wondered what people really think when I introduce myself. Most of the time people say, "What a beautiful name", but perhaps they are really thinking, "That's about as silly as 'Bambi'!" In fact, I found my name in a baby name book listed under "10 Over-the-Top Names to Avoid". Thank goodness I didn't encounter this stuff when I was still developing my sense of worth!
